Paris 2024 Olympics: Celebrating Team USA’s Immigrant Heritage

Naturalized Citizens on Team USA

The Paris 2024 Team USA boasts extraordinary athletes who have chosen to represent the U.S. and call it their home. From fencing to judo, these naturalized citizens bring unique backgrounds and exceptional talent to Team USA.

Cameroon: Joel Embiid (Basketball)

Born in Cameroon, Joel Embiid moved to the U.S. as a teenager to continue his education. Graduating from the University of Kansas (he’s a Jayhawk, just like Attorney Tracie!), he became a citizen in 2022. Now, he has quickly become one of the most dominant figures in basketball. His presence on Team USA highlights the global nature of the sport and the inclusivity of American athletics.

Germany: Steffen Peters (Equestrian)

Born in Germany, Steffen Peters moved to the U.S. in 1984 to train under Laurie Falvo. He became a citizen in 1992 and has since represented his new country at the Olympics. Peters has been a significant force in the equestrian world while representing the U.S. His expertise and achievements have greatly contributed to the success of Team USA in international competitions.

Belarus: Alexi Shostak (Trampoline)

Born in Belarus, Alexi Shostak came to the U.S. with his family as a child. He went on to become a naturalized citizen and now represents Team USA in trampoline gymnastics. His agility and prowess in trampoline gymnastics have earned him a spot among the elite athletes in the Olympics, representing the United States with pride.

Russia: Tatiana Nazlymov (Fencing)

Born in Russia, Tatiana Nazlymov moved to the U.S. and went on to become a naturalized citizen. With her athleticism in saber fencing, she  brings a rich heritage of fencing expertise to Team USA. Her skills and dedication to the sport continue to elevate the team’s standing on the global stage.

Cuba: Maria Laborde (Judo)

Born in Cuba, Maria defected and came to the U.S. for a better life. Once she naturalized, she went on to represent Team USA as an excellent judoka. Her journey to becoming an American citizen and representing the USA in the Olympics is truly inspiring.

UK: Miles Chamley-Watson (Fencing)

Born in the United Kingdom, Miles immigrated to the U.S. as a young child. Searching for a new start, his family built a life here and he went on to become a naturalized citizen. Becoming a world-renowned fencer, he quickly became known for his dynamic style and flair.

His journey highlights the significant contributions that immigrants make to American sports, as he continues to inspire young fencers with his achievements and passion for the sport.

First Generation Athletes on Team USA

Alongside the inspiring athletes who have made the bold choice to represent Team USA, leaving behind their countries of origin, there are countless American-born athletes with rich immigrant heritage. These remarkable individuals, from every corner of the globe, embody the beautiful mix of cultures and experiences that contribute to the success of American athletics.

Belize: Simone Biles (Gymnastics)

Simone Biles has become a household name with her extraordinary talent and determination. Although she is the pride and joy of Team USA, her mother is originally from Belize. Her mother, Nellie Biles, faced many challenges in her journey to the U.S., but went on to build a life for herself in her new country and play a pivotal role in nurturing the incredible talent for her daughter. Simone’s story is one of overcoming adversity, and her success has inspired countless young athletes to pursue their dreams, no matter the obstacles they face.

Argentina: Diana Taurasi (Basketball)

Diana Taurasi is celebrated as one of the greatest basketball players of all time. Known for her contributions to Team USA, Daiana grew up in a household that celebrated both American and Argentine cultures, as her father is originally from Argentina. Her diverse upbringing helped her develop a strong work ethic and passion for basketball. Her father’s immigration story instilled values of perseverance and dedication in her. Over the years, she has become one of the greatest basketball players in history, leading Team USA to numerous victories while honoring her roots and inspiring future generations of athletes.

Laos: Suni Lee (Gymnastics)

Suni Lee is known for her perseverance and strength in the gymnastics world. Overcoming obstacles thrown in her path, she gets her determination and grit from her parents. Her father came to the U.S. as a refugee as a result of the Vietnam war, and her mother immigrated to the U.S. from Laos as well. Suni’s success as an elite gymnast not only showcases her incredible talent but also honors her family’s sacrifices and the cultural heritage they brought with them.
