There are some weeks where nothing seems to go right. Thankfully, I haven’t had one of those in a while (and I hope I’m not jinxing myself now). We’ve been fortunate to have a lot of good news, and I want to share some of the stories with you.
Two VAWA Adjustment of Status cases were approved.
Anytime someone takes that step from being undocumented to having a green card is fantastic. However, when it’s someone who has been abused and controlled by a U.S. citizen spouse who likely said “I can have you deported if you don’t do what I say,” it’s extra sweet. These two women can freely and independently move forward with their lives.
We got the government to admit they were wrong.
The California Service Center issued a Request for Evidence for a long-married couple. Not only was there no reason for the request, but the request letter itself referenced facts that didn’t apply to my clients. Thankfully, I was able to get the case in front of a supervisor who agreed that not only was the Request for Evidence improvidently issued, it was entirely unnecessary and the case was approved.
Some of our deferred action U cases received their work cards this week.
As I’ve written in a previous post, USCIS is unable to grant any new U cases until October 1st. The U applications that have been reviewed, though, are getting deferred action while they wait for the final approval in October. This means their work cards are getting processed and approved now, and these families can emerge from the shadows, get Social Security numbers, obtain driver’s licenses, and begin their journey towards lawful permanent resident status.
As we enter June, I look forward to seeing what the next few weeks will bring. We have several interviews for green cards and naturalizations coming up, and the good news should hopefully continue!
